Euphoria, Pose & Drag Race: TV Shows & Inspiring Makeup Trends in 2022

by Facetune Team / January 10, 2022

As the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Perhaps this explains why social media platforms that are driven by images can so easily shift the cultural tides.

Take drag, for instance — something that was once only seen in gay bars is now mainstream. Between Instagram and “RuPaul’s Drag Race“, which has been on the air for 10 years now, drag queens and their signature style have enjoyed a surge in popularity

The Queens

The bright, bold colors needed to alter a face and bring stage appeal can now be found in any drugstore makeup aisle, with many folks opening up to the idea of experimenting with their beauty and makeup looks.

In some ways, drag makeup is now simply everyday makeup, with more and more people using false lashes, heavy contour, and well-placed highlights. Real-life is fleeting, Instagram is forever. One could argue that Kim and Kylie are rarely photographed without sporting full “drag”-style makeup — and nearly any move they make will influence trends.

The TV program “Pose” follows the drag ball culture of the ’80s and ’90s, when it was still the underbelly of the entertainment world. The show gives us a glimpse into brilliant makeup transformations, and it’s impossible not to see the influence on today’s trends.

Stage-worthy glitter, over-the-top lashes, and ultra-pigmented eyeshadows are now the norm. Painting the face with unusual materials like gold leaf and using sparkles in interesting places allow for extreme shine and creativity in our once-boring makeup routines.

The Teens

Leave it to a bunch of teenage girls to pick up on the trend. In “Euphoria”, teenage characters take on heavy topics, pushing the boundaries with explicit scenes — all while wearing makeup that is just as provocative.

The characters are often seen sporting creative, colorful looks that have us rethinking how we put together our own palettes. In one iconic color combo, Maddie uses lavender shadow with a red liner rimming the eye. Why didn’t we think of that? It looks sexy, edgy, and so unique.

The neon colors of the drag world aren’t lost on these girls either. Jules rocked the classic winged liner in neon green and it’s the norm to see Maddie in indigo and violet shades that we just can’t hate.

Another key component in the show’s makeup is the use of gemstones. Characters fill and shape the eyes with the sticky decals, inspiring us ordinary gals to use them in our own regular lives.

Sparkly, drawn-on tears seen in “Euphoria” also seem to channel drag style, and what was once something for the stage or Halloween is now a fun and acceptable way to elevate any look.
