Getting tired of your typical selfies? Try taking a self-portrait

Self-portraits give you the opportunity to explore different techniques. They allow you to be a little more artistic than you can be with a run-of-the-mill selfie.

Sure, portraiture is an art form, but you don’t have to get too intense here, nor do you really have to study how to take a good picture of yourself. All you need is your camera, a tripod, a remote, and a little imagination.

Feeling stuck? Take ahh-mazing self-portraits that really stand out with these six self-portrait ideas.

1. Create intrigue with a silhouette

Silhouettes are one of the easier self-portrait styles to pull off. They are a quick way to add some drama and mystery to your selfies.

All you need to do for a silhouette selfie is stand in front of a light source. You can use lamps, street lights, the sun, a campfire — get creative!

The “golden hour” at sunrise or sunset is perfect for silhouettes, but you can achieve the same look with an indoor lamp, too. Play with the angle of the light to get the effect just right and then snap away.

2. Get close … like, really close

Do you love your eyes? Lips? Your collarbone?

Pick your favorite feature and zoom in on it. Zoomed-in self-portraits let you focus on the details. Done well, these photos can tell an entire story on their own.

Hands can make for a great, textured self-portrait, thanks to their natural wrinkles, scars, and calluses. It gives a lot more feeling and depth to the picture.

If you’re looking for something a little more whimsical, try splashing your feet in a puddle or pond for a cool close-up pic.

3. Use a monochromatic color scheme

A monochromatic color scheme lends an artistic flair to your self-portrait. Because everything is in one color, it forces you to get creative and look for a fresh perspective with your self-portraits.

If blue is your color, wear a blue shirt and snap a pic with the ocean or a blue sky in the background.

Love the boldness of red hues? Pair a red dress with some bright red lipstick and stand in front of a white wall so the color really pops!

4. Use a filter to add a dreamy effect to your pics

Editing apps like Facetune2 make it super easy to change the look and feel of your self-portrait with the tap of a button.

You can blur your background (perfect if your location isn’t exactly photo-worthy) or adjust the light source for a softer glow.

5. Show off what you love

Do you love to read? Dance? Make pottery? Wherever your passions lie, take pics of yourself doing what you do best.

The trick here is not to look at the camera. Focus on what you’re doing and be in the moment.

This gives people a glimpse into what makes you tick. Plus, there’s nothing more attractive than seeing someone genuinely happy and absorbed in their favorite activity. Sure, you might feel a little silly snapping pics of your pirouettes, but the result will be worth it.

6. Use texture with black and white images

You probably know that adding a black and white filter to your pics can make them really stand out — now take it a step further by adding texture.

The highlights and lowlights of a black and white photo can dramatically bring out the different surfaces of an object. Try standing in front of a brick building or wood barn, sit on a stone wall, or simply hold a flower to add depth to any self-portrait.

Activate your artistic side with self-portraiture

Self-portraiture is an art form, and it gives you the freedom to shake up your typical selfies with bold, intriguing images that turn heads.

Plus, self-portraits can improve your self-confidence while celebrating your natural creativity. Follow these six tips and you’ll be snapping amazing self-portraits in no time!

And if you’re worried about getting it just right, have no fear. Facetune2 allows you to take any photo and turn it into a masterpiece.
